"Duodji" is a collective term for various activities such as homecrafts, artware (handicrafts), woodwork and trades, and for many Saamis it is a way of life. "Duodji" initially consisted of practical items and clothing produced for one`s self, but later on it became more esthetic and articles were produced for trading and sale. "Duodji" mirrors the Saami mode of living and cultural traditions.

"Duodji", a special feature of Saami culture. is an esthetic form of handicraft that is expressed differently from area to area. For ex., the regional traditions of the northern, lule, and southern Saami are reflected in "duodji" via the various effects that geography, ecology and economy have on nature. In working in `duodji‑ one uses various materials, techniques, and processes combined with the esthetic effects created by, shape. colour, and ornamental detail. The products are functional and tell about the people, environment, and the various effects of culture throughout history. Since `duodji‑ results in something being created, it is, of course, an important part of Saami culture. Saami "duodji" is a part of the Saami identity in the same way as other trades and cultural expressions, such as language and historical objects and experiences.
